Healthcare professionals rely on efficient note-taking, and with Autochart.ai, you're empowered to format and customize your documentation experience. But when it comes to transferring notes into your EMR (Electronic Medical Record), not all systems speak the same language — especially when it comes to rich text versus simple text.
Let’s break it down and guide you through using Autochart.ai in a way that best fits your EMR setup.
🧠 Why Your Notes Might Not Paste As Expected
When you copy a note from Autochart.ai and paste it into your EMR, it might not appear as expected. That’s not a bug — it’s a matter of compatibility.
Old EMRs often don’t support rich text. This means styles like bold, italics, indentation, bullet styles, emojis, and other formatting are stripped out or pasted incorrectly.
Modern EMRs, on the other hand, can fully support rich text, letting you preserve the visually enhanced version you see in Autochart’s preview.
✅ Choosing the Right Format for Your EMR
To make the most out of Autochart.ai's export functionality:
Use "Copy Simple Text" if you're working with an older EMR. This ensures compatibility by stripping down formatting into clean, readable plain text.
Use "Copy Rich Text" for modern EMRs that support it — this will retain all formatting like headers, bold text, spacing, and even emojis.
Pro tip: Even in modern EMRs, you can choose simple text if you prefer a minimal or distraction-free view.
🎨 Customizing Your Simple Text Experience
We get it — simple text can feel a bit… simple. But Autochart.ai gives you plenty of tools to personalize even the simplest format.
Here’s how:
Click your profile icon in the top-left corner of your screen.
Go to Settings.
Navigate to Copy/Paste Settings.
In this section, you can:
Include or exclude the note subject title
Change capitalization settings for headings (e.g., UPPERCASE vs. Title Case)
Adjust indentation spacing for points or bullets
Customize your bullet symbol (e.g.,
•
,→
,*
, etc.)
You’ll see a real-time preview so you can instantly view your choices in action. You can also hit the Reset to Default button to reset to the default copy/paste settings.
🛠️ Designing Your Ideal Note Format
Autochart.ai doesn’t stop at how you copy text — it also lets you completely personalize the structure and content of your notes.
Here are a few powerful features:
🔁 Learn My Style
Prefer notes a certain way? Use the "Learn My Style" feature — the last button on the side of the note preview (also available in your AI Settings which we will get to later)
Upload, paste, or type in examples of how you like your notes.
Autochart.ai’s AI will learn from them and generate notes in your preferred format.

🧾 Creating New Note Formats
Following are the steps if you would like to make a new note format from scratch:
Click the profile icon (top-right) and go to Settings.
Head to the Note Format tab.
Click the blue "New Note Type" button.
You can:
Name your custom format
Provide special Visit Type instructions
Write your custom note format directly
Once saved, it becomes part of your personal note types.
🧬 Cloning and Editing Existing Formats
Love a default format (like SOAP) but want to tweak it?
Scroll to the format you like in the Note Format tab. There are plenty of default or commonly used formats available.
The following is an example with a SOAP format:
Click on it — you’ll see the default is not directly editable.
Click Clone (bottom right of the module) to create an editable copy.
Or alternatively, you could click the button on the right side of the default note types to clone. The same button will become Archive or Delete button for personal templates.:
Make the changes you like — whether it’s changing section labels, adding/removing fields, or customizing the tone — and save it as your own.
Quick Tip:
You might have noticed symbols like ### or *. These are part of the "Rich Text" formatting talked about earlier. Due to it being a completely different language, there are special symbols used to edit and format text.
There is an (i) icon that has information on what each symbols mean and how to use them. As always feel free to ask for help regarding any formatting issues.
🔁 Learn My Style Revisited:
Do you remember the Learn My Style feature we talked about earlier. Well, it is also available in your Note Type Settings. Simply click the "Learn My Style" button— the green button beside "New Note Type".
Upload, paste, or type in examples of how you like your notes. Give it a custom name and simply hit "Submit" to save it to your note types. Autochart.ai’s model will learn from them and generate notes in your preferred format.
To learn more about how to use Learn My Style, please refer to this more in-depth article on the feature.
What to do after changing note types?:
Want it to apply to future notes:
If you have made you note type your favorite/default by clicking on the star button, you are good to go for the next encounter.
Want to apply the new note type to previous encounters:
Simply head back to the encounter and click on the "Regenerate" button underneath the note preview.
Double check that the new default note type is selected under "Note Type" and hit "Regenerate" button. Voila, you now have applied your custom note type to a previous note.
